The first trailer for The King’s Speech director Tom Hooper‘s highly anticipated big-screen version of Les Misérables is in the wild, and fans of the famed musical finally get a chance to hear Anne Hathaway‘s take on “I Dreamed a Dream.”
As the tragic Fantine in this 19th-century tearjerker, we already know she looks absolutely miserable with that heavily chopped hairdo. But how does she sound?

Well, her stripped-down version of the classic showstopper sounds a lot better than it did when Netizens first heard her sing it in an unauthorized trailer that leaked to the Web a few weeks ago, which was abruptly taken down after some negative reaction to her quavering vocals. Part of that mini-controversy might have been the fact that Hooper insisted on his actors singing live on set without lip-syncing to a pre-recorded track, according to USA Today.
But give the girl a chance. The epic sweep of the teaser, including our first good look at Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as his dogged pursuer Inspector Javert; Amanda Seyfried as Fantine’s daughter and Valjean’s ward Cosette, and newcomer Eddie Redmayne as Cosette’s true love, is sure to have us reaching for our hanky.
Les Misérables is slated to hit theaters on Dec. 14.
